Grass Pollen and Migraine: The Late Spring Trigger

Grass pollen is the single most common outdoor allergen in the world, and its season lands squarely in late spring and early summer — the weeks when most people have finally stopped thinking about allergies. Tree pollen season gets the attention because it comes first and because birch and oak are dramatic. Grass arrives quietly afterwards, affects more people, and for anyone with migraine it can be the more consequential of the two.

The reason is simple: grass is everywhere. You do not need to live near a meadow. Lawns, verges, parks, sports fields, and every untended patch of ground in every town produce it, and unlike trees, the source is never more than a few metres away.

Why grass season is different

Tree pollen comes in distinct waves — birch does its thing, then it stops, then oak starts. Grass pollen behaves differently. The main grass species that cause allergy problems overlap heavily in their flowering periods and cross-react with each other immunologically, so rather than a sequence of separate peaks you get one long, broad plateau lasting six to ten weeks.

Typical windows:

  • Northern Europe and northern North America: late May through July, peaking mid-June
  • Southern United States: can begin in March and extend much longer, with bermuda grass in particular producing pollen for months
  • Mediterranean and warm temperate zones: April through June
  • Southern hemisphere: October through December

The main offenders are timothy, ryegrass, orchard grass, fescue, bermuda and bahia. Because of cross-reactivity, someone allergic to timothy will usually react to most temperate grasses, which is why grass allergy tends to be an all-or-nothing proposition rather than something you can dodge by avoiding one species.

A second difference: grass pollen is released later in the day than tree pollen. Peak release is typically late afternoon and early evening, and counts often stay elevated well into the night in warm weather. If your symptoms are worse in the evening rather than first thing in the morning, that pattern points toward grass.

The migraine connection

The mechanism is the same one that operates across all pollen allergy, but the seasonal timing gives it a particular character.

Histamine and inflammatory load. An allergic response releases histamine, prostaglandins and inflammatory cytokines systemically. Histamine is a vasodilator and has been shown experimentally to provoke migraine attacks in susceptible people. During a sustained grass season, that inflammatory baseline stays elevated for weeks rather than days — this is prolonged low-grade provocation rather than a single hit.

Trigeminal irritation. Nasal inflammation irritates trigeminal nerve endings in the nasal lining, and the trigeminal system is the central pain pathway in migraine. This is why allergy-driven attacks so often present with facial and periorbital pain that people mistake for sinus disease.

Sleep degradation. Because grass pollen peaks in the evening and stays high overnight in warm weather, and because this is the season when people most want their windows open, grass allergy is unusually effective at wrecking sleep. Poor sleep is among the most consistent migraine triggers documented. In a bad grass season the cumulative sleep debt over six weeks may do more damage than the histamine.

The medication trap. Sedating antihistamines fragment sleep architecture even while making you drowsy. Decongestants, particularly pseudoephedrine, are stimulating and can be a migraine trigger in their own right for some people. Frequent use of pain relief for allergy headaches is a well-recognised route into medication overuse headache. The treatment can become part of the problem.

Late spring weather makes it worse

Grass season coincides with a genuinely active period for barometric pressure in most temperate regions. Late spring retains enough of the seasonal temperature contrast to keep fronts moving through regularly, and it adds the year's first serious convective weather — thunderstorm season.

Thunderstorms matter here for a specific reason. Thunderstorm asthma is a documented phenomenon, and grass pollen is its principal cause. The humidity and strong updraughts associated with a storm cause grass pollen grains to absorb water and rupture into much smaller fragments. Intact grass pollen is large enough to be filtered by the upper airway; the fragments are not, and they penetrate deep into the lungs. The most severe recorded episodes have produced mass casualty events, but far more commonly this simply means that the hours around a thunderstorm during grass season are disproportionately bad for anyone sensitised.

Combine that with the pressure fall that precedes the storm and you have the compound trigger day: falling current barometric pressure, gusty pre-frontal wind lifting pollen, and then pollen fragmentation as the storm arrives. If you get weather migraine and you also react to grass, these are the days to plan around. Reducing exposure in practice

Grass is harder to avoid than tree pollen because the source is closer, but the interventions are also more tractable.

Do not mow. If you can possibly delegate it, delegate it. Mowing during your season is direct, concentrated exposure at close range. If you must mow, do it after rain, wear a proper fitted mask rather than a cloth one, and shower immediately afterwards.

Reconsider evening outdoor time. Because grass pollen peaks late in the day, the traditional advice to exercise in the evening to avoid morning pollen is backwards for grass allergy. Morning exercise is often better during grass season.

Windows closed at night. This is the hardest one because grass season is warm, and it is also the highest-value one. If overnight ventilation is essential, a bedroom HEPA filter running continuously helps considerably.

Dry laundry indoors. Bedding hung outside during grass season arrives back in your bedroom coated in exactly the thing keeping you awake.

Sunglasses, genuinely. Wraparound sunglasses meaningfully reduce ocular pollen deposition, and eye symptoms are often the most miserable part of grass allergy.

Rinse your nose. Saline irrigation physically removes deposited pollen. Good evidence, low cost, no meaningful downside.

Ask about immunotherapy. Grass pollen is one of the allergens for which allergen immunotherapy — both subcutaneous injections and sublingual tablets — has the strongest evidence base. It requires commitment over several years and treatment usually begins months before the season, but for people with severe, well-defined grass allergy it can be genuinely disease-modifying rather than merely symptomatic. If grass season costs you a meaningful number of headache days every year, it is worth a conversation with an allergist.

Distinguishing grass allergy from other late spring triggers

Late spring and early summer bring several potential headache drivers at once, and it is worth separating them:

  • Grass pollen: itchy eyes and palate, evening-weighted symptoms, worse after mowing or on breezy dry days, no fever
  • Heat: headaches that build through hot afternoons, associated with dehydration, improve with cooling and fluids
  • Barometric pressure: track with frontal passages, often precede visible weather by hours, no nasal or ocular symptoms
  • Longer daylight and schedule change: later bedtimes, earlier waking with light, sleep-onset shift

The itch is the giveaway for allergy. Nothing else on that list itches.

FAQ

Is grass pollen worse than tree pollen for migraine?

Not inherently, but it affects more people and its season lasts longer, so for the population as a whole it accounts for more headache days. What matters for you individually is which one you are sensitised to.

Why do I only react in June and not in April?

That is a clean grass pollen pattern. Tree pollen peaks earlier; if April is fine and June is bad, grass is the likely culprit and worth confirming with testing.

Does cutting the lawn short help?

Somewhat, in that grass kept short does not flower and set pollen. But the act of mowing is itself high exposure, and your neighbours' grass and every verge in the area are still producing. It helps at the margin, not decisively.

Can grass allergy cause migraine with aura?

Allergy does not cause aura directly, but by lowering the overall migraine threshold it can make attacks — including attacks with aura, if that is your pattern — more likely to occur. The aura mechanism itself is unrelated.

Why are thunderstorms so bad during grass season?

Storm conditions rupture grass pollen grains into fragments small enough to reach the lower airway, which produces a much stronger response than intact pollen. Combined with the pressure drop ahead of the storm, this makes pre-storm hours during grass season a genuine compound trigger.

Should I take antihistamines every day through the season?

Non-sedating antihistamines are generally intended for regular use through an allergy season rather than as-needed, and continuous use tends to control symptoms better than intermittent use. That said, this is a question for a clinician who knows your history, particularly if you also take migraine-specific medication.
