How Pressure Pal Works: App Features Explained

Most migraine apps are built around the same idea: record what happened, look for patterns afterwards. That's useful, but it's always retrospective. You find out what triggered Tuesday's attack on Wednesday.

Pressure Pal is built around a different premise. Barometric pressure is one of the few migraine triggers that can be forecast — the weather models already predict it, hours to days ahead. If pressure changes affect you, that turns a trigger you can only note after the fact into one you can see coming.

This is a walkthrough of how that actually works in the app, and what it can and can't do.

The pressure forecast

The core screen shows barometric pressure for your location: where it is now, where it's been over recent days, and where it's forecast to go.

The chart is the important part. A single pressure reading tells you almost nothing on its own — 1009 hPa means one thing if pressure has been falling all day and something quite different if it's climbing back after a storm. What tends to matter for weather-sensitive people is the rate and direction of change, not the absolute number, which is why the app leads with a trend line rather than a figure.

Reading it is straightforward once you know what you're looking at. A steep downward slope usually means a low pressure system or front approaching, often with unsettled weather behind it. A steep upward slope means high pressure building in after a system clears. Both are changes, and for many people it's the change itself — in either direction — that's the trigger. Flat stretches are the settled periods.

Alerts

Rather than requiring you to remember to open the app, Pressure Pal can notify you when a significant pressure change is coming for your area.

The point of an alert isn't to warn you that a migraine is coming — no app can tell you that. It's to give you a window in which to do the small practical things that stack the odds in your favour: getting a full night's sleep, keeping acute medication with you rather than at home, eating properly rather than skipping lunch, easing off alcohol, and not scheduling the one commitment you absolutely cannot cancel.

None of those individually is dramatic. Collectively, on a high-risk day, they're the difference between an attack that derails a day and one that's manageable.

Attack logging

The logging side is deliberately lightweight, and that's a design decision rather than a limitation.

Detailed symptom journals capture more per entry, but they ask a lot of someone in the middle of an attack — which is exactly when the entry needs to be made. In practice, elaborate logging tools get abandoned after a few weeks, and an abandoned log is worth nothing. A simple record you actually maintain for six months beats an exhaustive one you keep for nine days.

So logging an attack is quick: when it started, how bad it was, roughly how long it lasted. That's enough to answer the questions that matter — how many headache days you had this month, whether your attacks cluster around pressure swings, whether a new treatment is working.

Putting the two together

The value comes from the overlay: your logged attacks sitting on the same timeline as the pressure record.

This is the question the app exists to answer — am I actually weather-sensitive? Plenty of people assume they are and turn out not to be. Plenty of others discover a pattern they'd never suspected. Group research can't answer it for you, because studies report averages across populations that include both strongly sensitive people and completely insensitive ones. Only your own data settles it.

Give it a few weeks minimum before drawing conclusions. Two attacks during two pressure drops is a coincidence. Twelve attacks over three months, with most clustering around significant pressure changes, is a pattern worth acting on. If after a couple of months your attacks show no relationship to pressure at all, that's a genuinely useful result too — it tells you to stop worrying about the weather and look harder at sleep, hormones, stress, or diet.

What it's useful for beyond your own planning

Two things worth knowing.

Doctor's appointments. "I get a lot of migraines" is a weak clinical statement. "I had 11 headache days last month, seven of them within a day of a pressure drop over 6 hPa" is a strong one. Frequency counts drive treatment decisions — the 15-day threshold separating episodic from chronic migraine has real consequences for what's prescribed and what insurers approve — and people are consistently poor at estimating their own headache days from memory.

Judging whether a treatment works. When you start a new preventive, the effect is usually a reduction in frequency rather than an elimination. A drop from 12 headache days to 8 is a meaningful success, and it's almost impossible to perceive without a log. People abandon working treatments all the time because the improvement wasn't dramatic enough to feel.

What Pressure Pal doesn't do

Being clear about this is more useful than overselling.

It doesn't predict migraines. It forecasts pressure — a known trigger for some people — and leaves the correlation with your own attacks to your data.

It isn't a diagnostic tool and it isn't medical advice. If you're getting recurring disabling headaches, you need a clinician; the app supports that conversation, it doesn't replace it.

It won't cover every trigger. Sleep, hormonal cycles, stress, alcohol, skipped meals, and dehydration all matter, and many people have several triggers that have to line up before an attack fires. Weather is often one contributing factor rather than the whole story.

And it can't tell you about a pressure change that isn't in the forecast. Local convective storms and rapid microscale changes aren't always captured well by regional models.

Getting started

Install it, allow location access so it can pull pressure for where you actually are, and turn alerts on. Then log every attack for a couple of months — including the mild ones, which are easy to skip and which distort the pattern when they're missing.

After that, look at the overlay and see what your own data says. That's the whole loop.
