Pet Dander, Air Quality, and Chronic Headache
Pet dander does not usually cause a headache directly. It maintains a low-grade allergic inflammation that sits in the background year-round and lowers the threshold at which other triggers — pressure change, poor sleep, a skipped meal — tip you into an attack. That is why dander headaches are so easy to miss: there is rarely a single dramatic exposure to point at, just a persistent baseline that makes everything else worse.
The other reason it goes unrecognised is emotional. Nobody wants to conclude that the animal sleeping on the bed is contributing to their head pain, and a great many people quietly rule it out before they have tested it properly. It is worth saying plainly that "your cat is involved" almost never has to mean "rehome your cat". The distance between current exposure and manageable exposure is usually a matter of a few rooms and a filter.
What dander actually is
Dander is not fur. It is microscopic flakes of shed skin, and the allergenic proteins ride on those flakes as well as in saliva, urine and sebaceous secretions. When a cat grooms, saliva protein dries on the coat and flakes off with the skin. When a dog shakes, the same material becomes airborne.
Two features make dander behave very differently from dust mite allergen.
The particles are small and sticky. A substantial fraction of airborne cat allergen travels on particles under 5 microns, which means it stays suspended for hours rather than settling within minutes, and it penetrates deep into the lower airway. Dust mite faecal particles are far larger and drop out of the air quickly. This difference is the entire reason air filtration works reasonably well for dander and rather poorly for mites.
It is electrostatically adhesive. Dander binds to textiles, upholstery, mattresses, curtains, car seats and clothing, and it is carried on clothing into buildings that have never contained an animal. Measurable cat allergen turns up in schools, offices, cinemas and hospitals with no cat anywhere near them. If you are sensitised, you are not only exposed at home.
Consequently, dander exposure is perennial. There is no season, no pollen count, no end to it in October. That is a large part of why it presents as chronic low-level symptoms rather than discrete attacks.
How an allergen becomes a headache
The route is inflammatory rather than mechanical.
Allergen binds IgE on mast cells in the nasal mucosa, which degranulate and release histamine and a cascade of other mediators. Locally you get vasodilation, mucosal swelling and increased secretion — the familiar congestion. But the response is not confined to the nose. Circulating inflammatory mediators and cytokines contribute to a systemic state, and in a migraine-prone nervous system that state matters.
Two things follow. First, trigeminal nerve endings in the nasal and sinus mucosa are directly sensitised by local inflammation, and the trigeminal system is the pain pathway that generates migraine. Second, histamine itself has vasoactive and neuromodulatory effects and is a recognised provoker of headache in susceptible people.
The evidence connecting allergic rhinitis with migraine is reasonably consistent in direction: people with allergic rhinitis report migraine more often, report more frequent attacks, and in several treatment studies report improvement in headache frequency when the allergic condition is treated properly. The literature is not strong enough to call allergy a cause of migraine, and it should not be read that way. What it supports is the threshold model — allergic inflammation is one of the loads on the system, and removing it gives you more headroom before other triggers matter.
The practical implication is the important one. If dander is contributing, you will not see a clean cause-and-effect pattern. You will see that your attacks respond to weather, or sleep, or hormones, more strongly than they should — because the baseline is already elevated.
The hypoallergenic breed problem
There is no hypoallergenic dog or cat in any meaningful sense.
The claim rests on shedding. Low-shedding breeds — poodles, poodle crosses, various wire-coated terriers — release less hair into the environment, and hair is visible, so the association with allergy feels intuitive. But the allergen is in skin, saliva and sebum, and low-shedding animals produce all three at ordinary rates. Studies that have measured actual allergen levels in homes with so-called hypoallergenic breeds have not found the reductions the marketing implies, and some have found no difference at all.
Individual animals do vary in how much allergen they produce, sometimes by a lot, and that variation is larger than the variation between breeds. Male cats produce more of the major cat allergen than females, and neutering reduces it. Those are real effects. Breed is mostly not.
Two things that are also worth knowing:
- Cat allergen persists in a dwelling for months after the animal has gone, particularly in carpet and soft furnishings. People who rehome an animal and see no improvement in four weeks frequently conclude the animal was not the problem, when the reservoir simply has not cleared.
- Sensitisation can develop after years of uneventful ownership. "I have had cats all my life" is not evidence that you are not reacting to this one.
Bedroom exclusion is the highest-value change
If you do only one thing, make the bedroom animal-free and keep the door shut.
The reasoning is exposure-time arithmetic. You spend roughly a third of your life in that room, breathing through your face pressed into bedding, in a space with limited air exchange, for eight uninterrupted hours. No other room comes close in cumulative dose. A bedroom that the animal has never entered will still contain some allergen carried in on clothing, but the levels are a fraction of a room where the animal sleeps on the bed.
Supporting measures, roughly in order of return on effort:
- A correctly sized HEPA purifier running continuously in the bedroom. Dander is exactly the particle size range where filtration performs well. Size it to the room volume rather than buying the cheapest unit, and run it constantly rather than only at night — the point is to keep the steady-state concentration down.
- Allergen-impermeable encasings on mattress and pillows, which help for dander for the same reason they help for mites.
- Wash bedding weekly at a hot temperature, and wash the animal's own bedding separately and often, since it is the main reservoir.
- Reduce soft furnishings where you reasonably can. Hard flooring holds far less allergen than carpet, and is far easier to actually clean.
- Vacuum with a HEPA-filtered machine, accepting that vacuuming itself re-suspends allergen for a period afterwards. Ventilate during and after.
- Wash your hands after handling the animal, and avoid touching your face before you do. This is unglamorous and genuinely effective.
- Bathing the animal reduces surface allergen, but the effect decays within a couple of days, so it only helps if done frequently. Most people do not sustain it.
Immunotherapy — allergen desensitisation supervised by an allergy specialist — is the option that addresses the sensitisation itself rather than the exposure, and it is worth discussing if avoidance is not achievable or not enough.
Where the barometer comes into it
Indoor allergen concentration is not constant. It depends on how much outdoor air is exchanging through the building, and air exchange depends on the weather.
Stagnant high pressure is the difficult pattern. When a persistent ridge sits overhead, subsidence caps vertical mixing, winds go light, and the pressure difference driving infiltration through a building envelope falls away. Windows tend to stay shut in the cold or the heat that often accompanies these spells. Indoor air exchange drops, and everything generated indoors — dander, cooking particles, volatile compounds, carbon dioxide — accumulates instead of dispersing. Outdoor particulate is also accumulating under the same inversion, so opening windows is a poor remedy.
This produces a genuinely confusing situation for anyone tracking their symptoms. The barometer is high and flat, which most weather-sensitive people read as a safe pattern, and yet the days feel bad. The pressure is not the problem. The absence of air exchange is.
Windy frontal weather is the opposite. Infiltration rises, indoor allergen is diluted, and outdoor particulate is flushed out — but the pressure is moving, and for a pressure-sensitive person that is the risky part.
So the two patterns fail you in opposite ways, and you cannot separate them by feel alone. Watching a barometric pressure trend for your location alongside your indoor conditions is what makes the distinction visible: a flat high-pressure stretch with bad days points indoors, an active falling barometer points at the weather. Somewhere like a stagnant inland valley location will show long flat ridges in winter; a coastal or frontal-track location will show far more movement.
Practically, on stagnant days: run the purifier harder rather than opening windows, use mechanical ventilation with filtration if you have it, and be stricter than usual about the bedroom.
Building the case in two weeks
The diagnostic problem with dander is that it has no on-off switch, so a standard trigger diary will not surface it. What works is looking for contrasts.
- The away test. Note how you feel after three or more consecutive nights somewhere without animals — a hotel, a relative's house. Two nights is not enough, because allergic inflammation takes time to settle. A consistent improvement is a strong signal.
- The morning gradient. Waking congested and improving over the first two or three hours points to a bedroom reservoir, whether dander or mites.
- The bedroom exclusion trial. Keep the animal out of the bedroom, run a purifier, encase the mattress, and give it three to four weeks. Anything shorter is not a fair test.
- Log alongside pressure. Four columns is enough: headache severity, nasal symptoms, pressure trend, whether windows were open. Patterns that are invisible day to day become obvious over a month.
If the away test is clearly positive and specific IgE or skin prick testing confirms sensitisation, you have your answer without guesswork. Testing is quick and worth doing rather than inferring.
