Dry air causes headaches through a completely different mechanism than humid air. Where muggy air blocks your ability to cool, dry air pulls water out of you faster than you notice — through your airways, your skin and your eyes. Below about 30% relative humidity, the mucous membranes lining your nose and sinuses begin to dry out and stop clearing properly, tear film evaporates faster than it is replaced, and you lose a meaningful volume of fluid to breathing alone without ever feeling thirsty. The common winter headache that starts mid-morning indoors and eases when you step outside is usually this.

The reason it catches people out is that dry air gives you no sensory warning. Humidity announces itself; dryness does not, until your throat is scratchy and your head aches.

High Humidity Headaches: Why Muggy Air Hurts

A high humidity headache is real, but humidity is almost never acting alone. Muggy air impairs your body's ability to cool itself by evaporation, which drives up core temperature, heart rate and fluid loss through sweat that never evaporates. At the same time, the air masses that carry high humidity into a region are usually warm, often unstable, and frequently arriving on a falling barometer. The result is a cluster of triggers — heat strain, dehydration, poor sleep, pressure change and sometimes higher pollen and mould counts — that show up together and get blamed on the one you can feel most obviously.

That distinction matters because it changes what you do about it. If you believe humidity is directly injuring you, there is nothing to be done short of moving. If you understand it as a heat-regulation and fluid problem arriving alongside other triggers, most of it becomes manageable.
