Winter Dry Air and Nosebleeds, Headaches, and Sinus Pain
Heated indoor air in winter routinely sits at 10 to 20 per cent relative humidity — drier than the Sahara Desert, which averages around 25. Your nose evolved to humidify incoming air to nearly 100 per cent before it reaches your lungs, and in those conditions it cannot keep up. The result is a predictable cluster: nosebleeds, sinus pain, a dull morning headache, a sore throat on waking, and worse sleep. All of it is fixable, and the fix costs less than most people assume.
This is the most under-diagnosed winter symptom driver there is, largely because it does not look like weather. It arrives quietly over days, not with a front.
Why heating dries the air
The physics is simple and worth understanding, because it explains why the problem gets worse the colder it is outside.
Relative humidity measures how much water vapour the air holds compared with the maximum it could hold at that temperature. Warm air can hold far more water than cold air — roughly double for every 10°C.
Take outdoor air at −5°C and 80 per cent relative humidity. That sounds damp, and outdoors it is. Now bring it inside and heat it to 21°C without adding any water. The amount of vapour has not changed, but the air's capacity has roughly tripled. Relative humidity collapses to around 20 per cent.
The colder it is outside, the more severe the effect. At −20°C outdoors, heated indoor air can easily fall below 10 per cent. Every air change — every time a door opens, every gap around a window, every extractor fan — replaces humidified indoor air with fresh, cold, and after heating, bone-dry air.
What dry air does to you
The nose and sinuses
Your nasal mucosa is a working humidifier. It warms and moistens roughly 10,000 litres of air a day, and it does so by giving up its own moisture.
In very dry air, three things happen in sequence. The mucus layer thickens and becomes sticky. The cilia — the microscopic hairs that sweep mucus and trapped particles toward the throat — slow down and eventually stall, because they can only move mucus of the right consistency. And the mucosa itself dries, cracks and becomes fragile.
That produces the classic winter triad: a blocked-feeling nose that no decongestant helps (because it is dryness, not swelling), facial pressure across the cheeks and brow, and nosebleeds from the fragile, cracked lining — usually from Kiesselbach's plexus, the cluster of small vessels just inside the nostril, which is why the bleeding is almost always from one side and near the front.
Headaches
There are three routes from dry air to head pain.
The sinus route: stalled mucociliary clearance means secretions sit in the sinuses instead of draining, producing pressure and a heavy frontal or facial ache. This is the one that feels like "sinus headache" and often is.
The dehydration route: you lose water continuously through breathing, and the drier the air, the more you lose. In cold weather thirst is suppressed, so intake falls at the same time as loss rises. Mild dehydration is a well-documented headache trigger.
The sleep route: a dry throat and blocked nose push you toward mouth-breathing, which fragments sleep, dries the throat further, and produces the morning headache that so many people attribute to the pillow or the pressure.
Everything else
Dry air also aggravates eczema and dry eye, worsens asthma and cough by irritating the airways, increases static shocks, and — this one is genuinely interesting — appears to improve the survival and transmission of respiratory viruses. Several lines of evidence suggest that both viral particles and your own mucosal defences fare worse at low humidity, which is one proposed contributor to winter respiratory-illness seasons.
The target: 40 to 50 per cent
This is the range most guidance converges on, and it is a compromise between two problems.
Below about 30 per cent, mucosal drying, static and viral survival all increase.
Above about 60 per cent, you get condensation on cold surfaces — windows, external walls, behind furniture — and that leads to mould, which carries its own respiratory and allergic consequences. Dust mites also thrive above roughly 50 per cent.
So: 40 to 50 per cent, measured, not guessed.
A hygrometer costs very little and is the single most useful purchase here. Put it in the bedroom, because that is where you spend the longest continuous stretch breathing the same air.
Fixing it
Get a humidifier for the bedroom first. Whole-house humidification is nice if you have ducted heating and want to bother; for most people, one decent unit in the room where they sleep captures most of the benefit for a fraction of the cost and hassle.
Evaporative (wick) humidifiers are self-limiting — they cannot over-humidify a room — but need filter changes. Ultrasonic units are quiet and efficient but aerosolise whatever is in the water, so use distilled or filtered water if your supply is hard, or you will coat the room in fine white mineral dust. Steam units are hygienically the simplest but use more electricity and pose a burn risk around children.
Whichever you pick, clean it. A dirty humidifier reservoir grows bacteria and moulds and then sprays them into the air you sleep in. Empty and dry it daily, clean it properly weekly. An unmaintained humidifier is worse than no humidifier.
Saline nasal spray or gel. Cheap, has no systemic effect, works. Use isotonic saline several times a day, and a saline gel or a thin layer of a nasal ointment inside the nostrils at night if you are getting nosebleeds. This treats the mucosa directly rather than the room.
Drink on a schedule. Thirst is an unreliable guide in cold weather. Attaching fluid intake to fixed events — a glass on waking, one with each meal, one before bed — works better than waiting to feel thirsty.
Lower the thermostat a little. Every degree you do not heat the air is a degree of capacity you have not added, and therefore relative humidity you have not destroyed. Going from 22°C to 20°C makes a measurable difference and you can make it up with a jumper.
Do not over-ventilate in a cold snap. Ventilation matters for air quality, but every air change resets your humidity. Ventilate deliberately and briefly — short, wide-open bursts — rather than leaving a window ajar all day.
Free humidity sources. Drying laundry indoors, leaving the bathroom door open after a shower, and keeping houseplants all add moisture. None of them alone will get you from 15 per cent to 45, but together they help.
Where this bites hardest
Dry indoor air is a problem anywhere cold and heated, but it is worst where the outdoor air is also dry, because then even ventilation brings nothing back.
Continental interiors with hard winters are the classic case — the Upper Midwest, the Canadian prairies, inland Scandinavia. Places like Saint Michael, Minnesota combine deep cold with an already-dry continental air mass.
Arid regions with cold winters are worse still, because the outdoor air has almost no moisture to begin with. Richland, Washington, sitting in the Columbia Basin rain shadow with seven inches of annual rainfall, is a good example: the winter inversions that trap air in the basin do nothing to humidify it.
Maritime climates are the gentlest case. Somewhere like Shrewsbury, where outdoor relative humidity is high most of the winter, heated indoor air still dries out — but the starting point is better and the fix is easier.
Separating dry air from pressure
If you track weather triggers, the two are easy to tell apart once you know what to look for, because their timing is completely different.
Pressure effects are fast: they arrive with a front, peak within hours, and resolve in a day or two. Dry-air effects are slow: they build over three to five days of a cold spell and persist as long as the heating is on.
If your symptoms start on day four of a cold snap and grind on for a week regardless of what the barometer is doing, humidity is the more likely driver. If they arrive within hours of a wind shift and are gone by the next afternoon, pressure is.

Is a nosebleed in winter something to worry about? Occasional front-of-nose bleeding in dry conditions, stopping within 10 to 15 minutes with pressure, is common and usually benign. Seek medical advice if bleeds are frequent, heavy, last longer than 20 minutes despite pressure, come from the back of the nose, start after a head injury, or occur alongside easy bruising or while taking anticoagulants.
How do I stop a nosebleed properly? Sit upright and lean forward — not back, which sends blood down the throat. Pinch the soft part of the nose, below the bony bridge, for a full 10 to 15 minutes without checking. Breathe through your mouth.
Does a bowl of water on the radiator work? Marginally. It evaporates slowly and the surface area is small. It will not move a room from 15 per cent to 45. Drying laundry indoors adds far more moisture.
Is "sinus headache" usually actually sinus? Often not. A substantial share of self-diagnosed sinus headaches turn out to be migraine, which commonly produces facial pain, nasal congestion and tearing. The dry-air version is real and does involve the sinuses, but if the headache is one-sided, throbbing, and comes with nausea or light sensitivity, migraine is worth considering.
Can I use a humidifier if I have asthma or allergies? Generally yes, and moderate humidity often helps airway irritation. But keep it under 50 per cent, because dust mites and mould — both major allergens — thrive above that. And keep the unit scrupulously clean.
What about humidifiers and hard water? Ultrasonic units aerosolise dissolved minerals as fine white dust that settles on everything and gets inhaled. Use distilled or demineralised water, fit a demineralisation cartridge, or choose an evaporative model, which leaves minerals in the wick.
The short version
Heated winter air is extraordinarily dry, and that dryness alone produces nosebleeds, sinus pain, morning headaches and disrupted sleep. Buy a hygrometer, aim for 40 to 50 per cent in the bedroom, use saline in the nose, drink on a schedule, and keep the humidifier clean. It is the cheapest fix in winter symptom management and the one most often overlooked.
