Pressure and weather in Bentonville

Bentonville sits at around thirteen hundred feet on the Springfield Plateau in the far northwest corner of Arkansas, on the gently rolling upland north of the deeper Boston Mountains and close to both the Missouri and Oklahoma lines. That plateau position places it at the eastern edge of the southern plains severe weather corridor, where dry air off the high plains regularly overruns moist Gulf air moving north. The result is a very active spring: from late March through May, deep low centres crossing Kansas and Oklahoma send dryline squall lines east into northwest Arkansas, and the pre-frontal pressure falls can be steep and fast. A shorter second severe season returns in late October and November. Winters are variable, swinging between mild southerly spells and short sharp arctic intrusions, and the region's damaging ice storms form when shallow cold air holds at the surface beneath warm air aloft.

What this means for you

Northwest Arkansas packs most of its significant pressure changes into two short seasons, spring and late autumn, so those are the months worth concentrating on. Watch the barometric pressure forecast ahead of a dryline squall line, when the fall arrives well before the storm itself.
