Pressure and weather in Rockland

Rockland lies on the South Shore about twenty miles southeast of Boston, close enough to the coast that ocean storms dominate the pressure record but far enough inland that it often sits on the snow side of a rain-snow line the beaches miss. The signature event here is the nor'easter. Lows that form near Cape Hatteras and deepen as they track up past the Gulf of Maine can drop the barometer twenty millibars or more in a day, and the strongest of them qualify as meteorological bombs. Those are the days when barometric pressure headaches are most reported across eastern Massachusetts. Summer is quieter, with sea breezes off Massachusetts Bay holding afternoon temperatures down and the barometer nearly flat for days at a time. The most volatile stretch runs from late October through March, with a secondary bump in March and April as coastal storms turn slushy.

What this means for you

Nor'easters give you two or three days of warning, which makes them unusually manageable if you track them. Check the barometric pressure forecast when a coastal low is being advertised, and log the storm days in a headache tracking app so you can see how far ahead of landfall your own symptoms actually begin.
