Pressure and weather in West Plains

West Plains sits on the broad upland surface of the southern Ozark plateau at around a thousand feet, a few miles north of the Arkansas border, in country where the karst limestone leaves sinkholes and springs but very little surface relief. That plateau position gives it a genuinely transitional climate: cold air masses sliding down from the plains lose their grip here, while Gulf moisture reaches this far north easily, and the two meet over the region often enough to make southern Missouri one of the more active severe weather corridors in the country. The pressure record shows it. Late March through May brings repeated deep low centres tracking across Kansas and Missouri, each one dragging a squall line east across Howell County, and a second smaller severe season returns in October and November. Ice storms in December and January are the other signature event, arriving on shallow cold air wedged beneath warm southerly flow aloft.

What this means for you

Two distinct severe seasons, spring and late autumn, mean the Ozark plateau gives you two clean test windows each year rather than one. Set the barometric pressure forecast alerts to fire on the pre-frontal drop and see how far ahead of the storm your own symptoms actually start.
