Pressure and weather in Westerville

Westerville sits along Alum Creek and its reservoir on the northeastern side of Columbus, on the gently rolling till plain where the last glaciers left a thin cover over the underlying shale. Central Ohio sits at a genuine crossroads: systems come in from the Great Lakes to the north, up the Ohio Valley from the southwest, and occasionally back-door from the coast, and the result is a barometer that rarely holds still for long in any season except high summer. Winter is the busiest, with Clippers, valley lows and the occasional Miller B storm redeveloping off the Atlantic coast and pushing snow back into the state from the east. Spring brings the region's severe weather in a short intense window from late April into June. The one thing central Ohio does not get is a moderating influence — no lake, no ocean, no mountains — so the full amplitude of every system arrives intact.

What this means for you

With no geographic damping, Westerville's barometer is a fairly pure signal of synoptic weather, which makes correlation easier than in coastal or mountain locations. Watch the current barometric pressure through a full Ohio winter to find where your personal threshold sits.
