Pressure and weather in Zeeland

Zeeland sits in the flat, intensively farmed country of Ottawa County, about ten miles from the Lake Michigan shoreline and just east of Holland. Ten miles is a meaningful distance on this coast. Close enough that lake-effect snow bands regularly reach the town through late November and December, but far enough inland that the lake breeze which keeps Holland cool on a June afternoon often stalls before it gets here, leaving Zeeland warmer and more prone to summer thunderstorms than the shoreline towns. The barometer follows the standard western Michigan calendar: Clippers and lake-effect setups through midwinter, a genuinely turbulent March and April as deeper systems track through, and the November storms that are the strongest of the year. The lake also delays autumn, holding warmth into October, and then delays spring by keeping the region cool into May.

What this means for you

Being just inland of the shoreline means Zeeland gets the storms without the full marine moderation, so pressure changes here read a little more cleanly than they do right on the beach. Set the barometric pressure forecast to alert on steeper falls and check them against your log through a western Michigan winter.
