Aquia Harbour occupies the wooded peninsula where Aquia Creek widens into the tidal Potomac in Stafford County, about forty miles south of Washington and just above the fall line. The creek here is tidal and brackish, and the surrounding country is low coastal plain cut by similar drowned valleys draining east. That proximity to a large tidal estuary softens the temperature extremes a little and raises the summer humidity considerably, but the main pressure story is the same one that runs the whole Chesapeake region: winter coastal lows tracking up from the Carolinas, which produce the biggest and fastest barometric drops of the year and put this part of Virginia right on the usual rain-snow boundary.
