Arcata sits at the north end of Humboldt Bay on California's far north coast, hemmed between the Pacific and the coastal redwood ranges. The cold California Current runs immediately offshore and gives the town one of the narrowest annual temperature ranges in the continental United States — summer afternoons and winter afternoons differ by only a handful of degrees. Through the summer months the north Pacific high parks offshore, northerly wind drives upwelling of very cold water, and a persistent marine layer forms and floods the bay almost daily.
