Pressure and weather in Bordeaux
Bordeaux stands on a bend of the Garonne about sixty kilometres from the open Atlantic, upstream of the point where the Garonne and Dordogne merge into the Gironde estuary. Between the city and the ocean lies the Landes, the great planted pine forest of southwest France, which takes some of the edge off the sea wind and helps make the surrounding vineyards possible. The climate is oceanic and mild, wetter in autumn and winter, with summers that have grown reliably hot. Barometric pressure here is set by the Atlantic. From October through March, depressions crossing the ocean track over or just north of the Bay of Biscay, and each one brings a fall in current barometric pressure, a frontal passage with rain and a southwesterly wind, then a recovery as the ridge behind builds in. Occasionally one of these becomes something far larger: the storms that have done real damage to the Aquitaine forests, notably in December 1999 and again in January 2009, arrived with extremely deep central pressure and barometric falls sharp enough to be remarkable in themselves. The counterweight is the Azores high, which extends a ridge over southwest France for long settled spells, most persistently in summer, flattening the barometer for weeks. High summer can also bring hot air drawn up from Iberia beneath that ridge, occasionally ending in a violent evening thunderstorm as a weak Atlantic disturbance undercuts it. Spring and autumn are the transitional, most variable seasons. A barometric pressure forecast for Bordeaux matters most from late October through March.
What this means for you
Can barometric pressure cause headaches? Southwest France alternates between long Azores-ridge calm and busy Atlantic spells, so the contrast between a quiet fortnight and a stormy one is stark. Weather-sensitive people here often find their symptoms cluster tightly into the depression-driven weeks.
