Brno sits in a basin where two rivers meet, with the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands to the west and the outer Carpathians to the east, at the southern end of the natural corridor that links the North European Plain to the Danube basin. That corridor channels air masses through the region and makes Moravia a meeting ground for weather of very different origins. The systems that matter most are the Genoa lows that form in the lee of the Alps and then track northeast on the so-called Vb path, passing close to Moravia and delivering the region's heaviest and most persistent rain, along with sustained pressure falls over a day or more. Winter brings the opposite extreme, with blocking anticyclones settling over central Europe, cold air pooling in the basin under an inversion, and the barometer sitting high and almost motionless for a week. Summer is warm and continental with evening thunderstorms rolling off the highlands. The transitions in spring and autumn are the changeable months.
