Campbell lies on the valley floor south of San Jose, hemmed by the Santa Cruz Mountains rising to the west and the Diablo Range to the east, in one of the driest corners of the Bay Area because the coastal range strips moisture from onshore flow before it arrives. The barometric year here is deeply lopsided. From roughly May to October a persistent high sits offshore, frontal systems are steered far to the north, and the pressure trace flattens for months on end, varying more with the daily marine layer pushing through the gaps than with any weather system. Then between November and March the storm door opens, and atmospheric rivers aimed at central California arrive in clusters, each one bringing a distinct pressure fall over twelve to twenty-four hours. A handful of these events account for most of the annual rainfall and nearly all of the year's significant barometric movement. February is typically the wettest and most changeable month.
