Pressure and weather in Chelyabinsk

Chelyabinsk lies on the Miass River on the eastern side of the Southern Urals, where the low, forested hills of the range give way to the vast West Siberian Plain. The city's climate is sharply continental: long, cold winters and warm, sometimes hot, summers, with big temperature swings between seasons and sometimes between days. In winter, the enormous Siberian High dominates much of northern Asia, and Chelyabinsk often sits on its western edge. When the high extends over the region, the barometer can climb well above 1,035 hectopascals and stay there, bringing clear skies, still air and bitter cold, with temperatures sometimes falling below minus 30 degrees. These cold, stable spells can last for a week or more. They end when Atlantic cyclones push east across European Russia and the Urals, or when lows from the south and southwest move up from Kazakhstan, bringing a sharp fall in pressure, snow and a sudden change in temperature. Spring can be erratic, with rapid swings between thaw and cold. Summer brings convective storms and warmer, more humid spells, with occasional heat waves from Central Asia.

What this means for you

In Chelyabinsk, the transitions between long Siberian High spells and approaching cyclones bring some of the largest pressure changes of the year, especially from November to March. A barometric pressure forecast helps you anticipate those shifts, and a migraine tracker app can help you see whether very high, stable pressure or the fast drop that ends it matters more to you.
