Colchester stands on a low ridge above the Colne, a few miles inland from the estuary and the Essex saltmarshes, in a corner of East Anglia that records less rain than almost anywhere else in the country. The reason is position rather than latitude: Atlantic depressions crossing Britain from the west have already shed most of their moisture over Wales and the Midlands by the time they reach the east coast, so Colchester often gets the wind and the pressure fall without much of the rain.
