Cottage Lake sits on the rising ground east of Woodinville, between the Sammamish River valley and the first slopes of the Cascades, in the wettest part of the Puget Sound lowlands outside the mountains themselves. The second is the Puget Sound Convergence Zone, a genuinely local phenomenon in which westerly flow splits around the Olympic Mountains, rejoins over the Sound, and forces air upward in a narrow band that often sets up right across this part of King County. It can be pouring here while Seattle and Everett stay dry. Summer is the reward: a strong ridge builds offshore and the barometer goes quiet from July into September.
