Pressure and weather in Damascus
Damascus sits at about 700 metres on a plateau where the Barada river leaves the mountains and spreads into the Ghouta, the irrigated belt that separates the city from the Syrian desert beyond. The Anti-Lebanon mountains stand directly between Damascus and the Mediterranean, and they strip most of the moisture from westerly systems, which is why the city is far drier than Beirut only a short distance away. The wet season runs from November to March, when Cyprus lows form over the eastern Mediterranean and cross the Levant, bringing the year's rain and its only substantial pressure falls, with occasional snow on the higher ground. Spring is the season of the sharqi and khamsin, hot dry winds carrying desert dust ahead of eastward-moving depressions, which raise temperatures sharply and cut visibility. From June to September a stable regime settles in, rain is essentially absent and the barometer moves very little for months.
