Pressure and weather in Hanoi
Hanoi lies on the flat Red River Delta, roughly a hundred kilometers from the Gulf of Tonkin, and its year follows the East Asian monsoon. From May to September the city bakes in heat and humidity under a shallow thermal low, with heavy downpours and thunderstorms, and typhoons that make landfall along the northern coast can pass close enough to lower the pressure sharply and bring days of rain. From October to March the pattern reverses: a strong Siberian high sends surges of cool, dry air south, arriving as pressure rises quickly and temperatures fall by several degrees in a day. Late winter also brings the famous fine drizzle known locally as mua phun. Pressure differences across the year are moderate but distinct. The typhoon months of July through September and the first cold surges of late autumn are when changes are largest.
