Pressure and weather in New Brunswick
New Brunswick lies on the south bank of the Raritan River in Middlesex County, at the head of navigation where the river widens toward Raritan Bay, with the low ridge of the Watchungs to the northwest and the coastal plain opening out to the south. The Raritan drains a large basin through a relatively narrow channel here, which is why the defining weather events of recent decades have been tropical rather than wintry. Decaying hurricanes and tropical storms moving north through the mid-Atlantic wring out enormous rainfall over the basin, and the river responds within hours; the barometric pressure signature of those systems is a broad, smooth minimum lasting most of a day, quite different in shape from a sharp winter low. Cold-season weather brings coastal storms that deepen off the Delmarva and track northeast, giving long falls in current barometric pressure, strong northeasterly wind and precipitation that is frequently marginal at this elevation so close to the bay. Between the extremes, the warm months follow the usual mid-Atlantic pattern of humid stagnation under the Bermuda high, occasional sea breeze reaching up the river valley, and squall lines crossing from Pennsylvania with a brief sharp pressure jump. A barometric pressure forecast for New Brunswick is most useful in late summer and from December through March.
