Panama City sits at the Pacific mouth of the canal, less than nine degrees from the equator, and its pressure behaviour is unlike anything in the mid-latitudes. This close to the equator the Coriolis effect is too weak to spin up the deep low pressure systems that dominate temperate weather, so the barometer does not swing with passing fronts.
