Perrysburg sits on the south bank of the Maumee River a few miles upstream from Maumee Bay, on the flat lakebed plain that was once the Great Black Swamp. Its position at the far western end of Lake Erie gives it one of the more unusual pressure-related phenomena in the Great Lakes. Erie is shallow and oriented southwest to northeast, so a strong wind along its axis physically pushes water toward one end, producing a seiche that can raise or lower the lake level several feet within hours.
