Pressure and weather in Seal Beach
Seal Beach occupies the coastal corner where the San Gabriel River meets the Pacific, just south of Long Beach and at the western end of Orange County's beaches. The pressure record here is one of the calmest in the United States. For much of the year the eastern Pacific high parks offshore and holds the barometer nearly steady, and the marine layer that produces May Gray and June Gloom comes and goes without much change in pressure at all. The exceptions are what matter. Winter atmospheric rivers arriving from the west drop pressure noticeably over a day or two, and Santa Ana events reverse everything — high pressure builds over the Great Basin, air rushes offshore through the passes, and Seal Beach gets hot, dry, startlingly clear days with a shifted pressure gradient and very low humidity. Those offshore-flow episodes, most common from September through December, are the ones weather-sensitive locals tend to flag.
