Pressure and weather in Seville
Seville lies at barely twenty-five feet above sea level on the Guadalquivir, about eighty kilometres up the valley from the Atlantic, in a broad lowland hemmed in by the Sierra Morena to the north and the Subbetic ranges to the southeast. The shape of that basin makes the city the hottest large settlement in Europe. In summer the Azores High expands over Iberia and locks the region into a stable, subsiding air mass for weeks at a time, with the barometer flat, the sky cloudless and afternoon temperatures regularly above forty degrees Celsius. The valley traps that heat and releases it slowly, and the hot easterly terral wind descending off the interior makes it worse. Autumn and winter belong to the Atlantic. Depressions tracking in from the west cross Andalusia with falls of twelve to twenty hPa, and because the Guadalquivir valley opens directly toward the ocean these systems reach the city with more force than the latitude suggests, bringing most of the year's rain between November and March in a handful of intense spells. Spring is the transitional season and the most changeable, alternating warm southerly surges from Africa with cool Atlantic incursions.
