Pressure and weather in Sofia
Sofia sits in a closed basin roughly 550 metres above sea level, with Vitosha rising to 2,290 metres immediately south, the Lyulin hills to the west and the main Balkan Range a short distance north. Three consequences follow. Station pressure here runs well below sea-level values, so the raw numbers look low even in settled weather and only the change carries information. The basin is also a near-perfect trap for cold air: from November to February an inversion can seal the valley for a week at a time under a flat high, with the mountain tops in sunshine and the city underneath grey stagnant air and its worst pollution of the year. And the weather that breaks those spells usually comes from the south. Genoa and Aegean cyclones track up over the Balkans and deliver the deepest falls of the year, often with heavy snow on the southerly flank. The Siberian high pushes west a few times most winters, bringing hard frost and a barometer that climbs and then sits. Summer is convective rather than synoptic, with afternoon thunderstorms building over Vitosha and very little large-scale pressure movement.
