South Lyon sits on the rolling end moraine belt west of Detroit, a landscape of low hills, kettle lakes and wetland left by the retreating ice, in the headwater country of the Huron River. It is far enough east of Lake Michigan that lake-effect bands have usually spent themselves before arriving, and far enough inland from Lake Huron and Lake Erie to miss most of their shoreline moderation, which leaves the area with a more continental temperature range than anywhere on the Michigan coasts.
