St. Catharines occupies the narrow Niagara Peninsula between Lake Ontario to the north and Lake Erie to the south, with the Niagara Escarpment running through town and the Welland Canal cutting across it. Two large lakes on either side make this one of the mildest climates in Canada, and the escarpment shelters the land below it enough to support the country's main wine region.
