Pressure and weather in Strasbourg
Strasbourg sits on the Rhine plain in Alsace, in a broad rift valley with the Vosges rising to the west and the Black Forest to the east, each range reaching well over a thousand metres. The Vosges cast one of the most effective rain shadows in France. Atlantic depressions crossing the country drop their moisture on the western slopes and arrive here largely wrung out, which makes the Alsace plain among the driest and sunniest lowlands in the country. The same walls trap air. Under winter high pressure the valley fills with cold stagnant air and dense fog that can last for days, the Vosges crests in bright sun above an unbroken grey lid, and the city's poorest air quality of the year builds underneath it. When the Atlantic storm track does push through, the falls are moderate rather than dramatic, since the depressions are old by the time they reach the Rhine. A warm dry foehn wind off the Vosges occasionally scours the valley clear in a few hours. Summer is continental, warm and thundery, with convection building over both ranges through the afternoon.
