Pressure and weather in Tallinn
Tallinn is built where the Baltic Klint, the limestone escarpment running along Estonia's north coast, meets the Gulf of Finland, with the old upper town on the cliff and the harbour on low ground below. At fifty-nine degrees north the winter days are very short and the sun stays low even at noon, and the sea, being brackish and shallow, freezes across the gulf in cold years, removing its moderating influence exactly when it would help most. Two air masses compete for the city. Atlantic depressions steered up the storm track arrive from the southwest, mild, wet and windy, and can drive water into the narrowing Gulf of Finland as a surge that floods the harbour district. Against them the Siberian high pushes west several times most winters, bringing still, clear, bitter weather and a barometer that rises high and then holds. The switches between those two regimes are abrupt and account for the year's largest pressure swings. Summer is cool and changeable, with very long daylight and comparatively modest variation.
