Tallmadge sits where the flat glaciated lowland around Akron begins to climb into the Allegheny Plateau, at around a thousand feet, in the upper Cuyahoga watershed. That rise is small in absolute terms but it does real work in winter. Cold northwesterly flow crossing Lake Erie picks up moisture and then meets the plateau slope here, and the forced ascent squeezes out more snow than the same air deposits on the lake plain nearer Cleveland. The result is the southwestern tail of the Ohio snowbelt, with a seasonal total well above the state average and a pattern in which the heaviest snow often arrives behind a departing low on a rising barometer. The larger falls come from Ohio Valley lows tracking northeast, which frequently place the area right on the rain and snow boundary, and from clippers crossing quickly with a hard wind shift. Once Lake Erie freezes, usually in late January or February, the snow machine shuts off almost overnight. Summer brings humid southwesterly flow and organised thunderstorm complexes arriving from Indiana after dark.
