Pressure and weather in View Royal
View Royal wraps around Portage Inlet and the Gorge Waterway on the southern end of Vancouver Island, which places it in one of the driest positions on the Canadian west coast. The Olympic Mountains across the Strait of Juan de Fuca cast a pronounced rain shadow over this corner of the island, so annual rainfall here is a fraction of what falls only 40 kilometres up-island. The rain shadow does nothing, though, to shield the barometer. From October through March the North Pacific storm track aims frontal systems directly at the island, and the deepest of them undergo rapid intensification over the open ocean before landfall, occasionally dropping 20 hectopascals or more in 24 hours. Those are the region's genuine pressure events, and they arrive in sequences: several days of falling then rising then falling again as one front follows another. Summer is the opposite. From July into September the North Pacific High settles offshore and holds, producing weeks of quiet, dry, remarkably stable weather with very little pressure movement of any kind.
