Vista sits in the rolling country between the coastal lagoons at Carlsbad and the higher inland valleys, close enough to the ocean to catch the marine layer most mornings but far enough back that it burns off earlier and warms more than the beach towns. For most of the year the barometer here is remarkably quiet, held steady by the eastern edge of the North Pacific High. Two things interrupt it. The first is the Santa Ana pattern, most common from September through January, when strong high pressure builds over the Great Basin and air drains southwest through the mountain passes toward the coast, compressing and drying as it descends. Santa Ana events bring a rapid pressure rise, single-digit humidity and the region's highest fire risk, and they reverse the usual onshore flow completely. The second is the winter atmospheric river, when a narrow plume of subtropical moisture aims at Southern California and a Pacific low drags pressure down sharply. Between those two, the marine layer months of May and June bring persistent low cloud but almost no pressure movement at all.
