Washougal sits on the north bank of the Columbia at the point where the river emerges from its gorge through the Cascade Range, just east of Vancouver and across from the Oregon shore. That location makes it one of the windiest inhabited spots in the Pacific Northwest, because the gorge is the only sea-level gap through the mountains and air is forced through it whenever pressure differs between the dry interior and the wetter west side. In winter, cold high pressure building over the Columbia Basin drives bitter east winds down the gorge, and when they undercut milder Pacific air arriving from the west the result is freezing rain — the local silver thaw. In autumn and winter, Pacific frontal systems and atmospheric rivers bring the main pressure falls, arriving in sequence for days at a time. Summer is dry and settled, with the gorge wind reversing to a westerly.
