Pressure and weather in Waunakee

Waunakee sits just north of Lake Mendota in the Yahara valley, on the edge of the glaciated plain where the ice sheet stopped short of the Driftless hills to the west. It is far enough from both Lake Michigan and Lake Superior to be a genuinely continental location, with none of the lake moderation that softens the swings in Milwaukee or Green Bay. The result is one of the widest annual temperature and pressure ranges in the Midwest. The cold half of the year is the volatile half. Alberta clippers, Colorado lows and the occasional Great Lakes cyclone all track through southern Wisconsin, and the transition between a departing storm and the Arctic high building behind it produces the sharpest changes on the chart. Late winter adds a particular local difficulty: the freeze-thaw cycle of February and March, when successive systems swing the region across the freezing line every few days. Severe thunderstorms arrive from May through August, usually late in the day or overnight as complexes move in from Minnesota and Iowa.

What this means for you

Waunakee's continental position means larger pressure swings than lakeside Wisconsin cities see, concentrated between December and March. A barometric pressure forecast through the late-winter freeze-thaw weeks is where weather-sensitive people tend to find the clearest pattern.
