Wroclaw spreads across the Odra and its islands in the Silesian Lowland, with the Sudetes rising 60 kilometres to the southwest and the open plain of central Poland extending north and east. Its position between mountains and lowland gives it one of the mildest climates in the country, and also a particular vulnerability.
