Pressure and weather in Yelm
Yelm sits on one of the gravelly outwash prairies of the southern Puget Sound lowland, between the Nisqually River and the foothills, with Mount Rainier filling the eastern skyline about thirty miles away. It is inside the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, so it is noticeably drier than the coast, but it is still firmly in the path of the Pacific storm track from October through March. That season is the whole story for the barometer here: a conveyor of North Pacific lows and atmospheric rivers crosses the region, each one dropping pressure steadily over half a day and then recovering, sometimes half a dozen times in a fortnight. Yelm also catches a local phenomenon, the cold easterly outflow that pours out of the Cascade passes behind an arctic air intrusion and produces the region's rare snow and freezing rain. Summers under the North Pacific high are dry, mild and very quiet on the pressure trace.
