Zagreb spreads across the Sava river plain with the wooded ridge of Medvednica rising directly behind the northern edge of the city to over a thousand metres. That mountain marks a real climatic boundary: Zagreb sits on the continental Pannonian side of the divide, with hot humid summers and cold winters, while the Adriatic coast an hour and a half south has a wholly different Mediterranean regime.
