Pressure and weather in Greer

Greer lies on the rolling piedmont between Greenville and Spartanburg, close enough to the Blue Ridge escarpment that the mountains shape its weather in ways that surprise newcomers. The defining local phenomenon is cold air damming, known here as the wedge: shallow cold air drains down from the north and east and banks against the mountain wall, trapping the Upstate under grey drizzle and stubborn cold while places an hour away sit in sunshine. When warm Gulf air overruns that wedge in winter the result is freezing rain, and the Upstate sees damaging ice storms more often than its latitude would suggest. Those setups produce complicated pressure signatures, with slow falls running for a day or more. Spring brings squall lines up from the Gulf, usually arriving in the evening, and remnants of tropical systems track through in late summer, weakened but very wet after crossing the mountains.

What this means for you

Wedge events give long, gradual declines rather than sharp drops, and those can be the worst kind for a weather migraine. Watching the trend across a full day beats checking once.
