Pressure and weather in Harvest

Harvest sits on the open floor of the Tennessee Valley in north Alabama, with the flat-topped ridges of the southern Cumberland Plateau standing along the horizon to the east and south. This is the heart of what forecasters call Dixie Alley, and it carries a genuinely different severe-weather risk from the plains: the season runs longer, peaking in March and April and returning again in November and December, and a much higher share of the storms arrive at night. Long-track squall lines come up from Mississippi in the evening hours, preceded by a steep pressure fall and followed by a fast rise. The terrain complicates matters, because the plateau edge nudges storms and the valley floor channels low-level winds. Summer is hot, humid and largely uneventful for the barometer, and the calmest, most settled month is usually October.

Overnight severe weather is the defining risk here, and overnight pressure falls are easy to sleep through. An automatic migraine tracker app captures what a bedside note never will.
