Pressure and weather in Lorain

Lorain sits right on the Lake Erie shoreline, and Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, which makes it the most responsive of them: it warms fast, cools fast, and freezes in most winters. That behaviour sets the local weather calendar. From late November until the lake ices over, cold air crossing open water picks up heat and moisture and delivers lake-effect snow downwind; Lorain sits at the western end of the belt, so it gets less than the snowbelt east of Cleveland but is still affected when the wind aligns, and the effect shuts off abruptly once the ice forms. Large Great Lakes cyclones are the other feature, particularly in November, when systems deepening over the region produce the season's strongest winds and its deepest pressure readings. In spring the cold lake stabilises the air near shore and suppresses thunderstorms that are firing twenty miles inland, and in summer the lake breeze sets up most afternoons and pushes the convergence line south of town.

What this means for you

November lake cyclones are the deepest events of the year here, and lake-effect setups add frequent smaller changes. Checking the current barometric pressure through late autumn tends to be most informative.
