Pressure and weather in Glasco

Glasco is an old bluestone shipping hamlet on the west bank of the Hudson, sitting on the narrow river flats with the Catskill escarpment climbing steeply a dozen miles inland. That position between a tidal river valley and a substantial mountain range gives the mid-Hudson a weather character all its own. Coastal storms tracking north from the mid-Atlantic ride up the valley and can deliver very heavy snow here while New York City sees rain, because cold air drains south down the valley and lingers below the warm air aloft. Those systems bring the deepest pressure falls of the year, mainly from January through March. In summer, thunderstorms build over the Catskills through the afternoon and roll east down onto the river, often arriving in the early evening. Remnant tropical systems in late summer have produced the valley's worst flooding, with long slow declines lasting more than a day.

What this means for you

Valley cold-air damming means the mid-Hudson often experiences a different storm than places thirty miles away. Local readings matter more here than a regional barometric pressure forecast.
