Hurricane Season and Migraine: Preparing for Pressure Drops

Tropical systems produce the deepest barometric pressure falls in the ordinary weather calendar. A strong hurricane's centre can sit 60 to 80 hPa below normal sea level pressure, and even a modest tropical storm passing nearby will move the barometer more in twelve hours than a winter cold front does in three days. For weather-sensitive people this is worth preparing for rather than reacting to, because unlike most triggers, a hurricane announces itself three to five days ahead. The preparation that matters is unglamorous: refill prescriptions early, protect sleep, plan for the power going out, and decide in advance what you will do if you get an attack during an evacuation.

Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with activity concentrated heavily in August, September and early October. The eastern Pacific season starts slightly earlier, on 15 May.

The size of the change

To put a hurricane's pressure drop in context, it helps to know what ordinary variation looks like.

Sea level pressure at most locations spends the year between about 995 and 1030 hPa. A vigorous winter cold front might move it 10 to 15 hPa over a day. A strong mid-latitude storm, 25 or 30.

Tropical systems are a different scale. A tropical storm has a central pressure around 990 to 1000 hPa. A Category 3 hurricane, roughly 945 to 965. The strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record have had central pressures below 900 hPa; Wilma in 2005 reached 882.

But central pressure is only half the story, and arguably the less important half for most people, because most people are not under the eye. What matters is the pressure gradient — how steeply the pressure rises as you move away from the centre — and how fast the system is moving past you.

A compact, fast-moving hurricane passing 80 kilometres away can drop the barometer 25 hPa in six hours and put it back up in six more. A large, slow-moving system might drop it 15 hPa over a day and a half and hold it down for another day. The first is a shock; the second is a long grind. People who are sensitive to pressure change often report reacting differently to the two, and there is reason to think rate of change matters as much as total magnitude, though the research on this is not settled.

The timeline of a pressure drop

If a hurricane is approaching your area, the barometer follows a fairly predictable sequence.

Three to five days out. Nothing on the barometer yet. This is when the forecast track becomes useful and when preparation should start.

36 to 48 hours out. Pressure begins a slow, almost imperceptible decline. Swells arrive on the coast. High cirrus appears. Many weather-sensitive people report symptoms starting around here, well before anything looks like a storm, which is one of the reasons the pattern is easy to dismiss as coincidence.

12 to 24 hours out. The decline steepens. Outer rainbands arrive with squally wind. This is typically where the fall becomes obvious on a chart.

The closest approach. The steepest part of the curve, sometimes several hectopascals per hour. If the eye passes overhead there is a brief calm at the lowest reading, then the pressure rises as fast as it fell, which is its own kind of shock to the system.

After passage. Recovery is usually faster than the decline, over roughly six to eighteen hours, though a slow or stalling system can leave the pressure depressed for days. Harvey in 2017 held low pressure over southeast Texas for the better part of four days while the rainfall accumulated, which is a very different experience from a clean landfall and departure.

What preparation actually helps

Most hurricane preparation advice is about property and safety, and that comes first. What follows assumes you already have the standard kit and a plan for whether you are staying or leaving.

Refill medication early, and carry it on you. This is the single highest-value action. Pharmacies close, roads flood, and evacuation routes do not run past your usual chemist. If you use an acute migraine treatment, make sure you have a full supply before the storm is within 72 hours, and keep it in the bag that goes with you rather than in the bathroom cabinet. Many insurers will authorise an early refill ahead of a declared emergency if you ask.

Protect sleep aggressively. Sleep disruption is one of the better-established migraine triggers, and hurricane preparation destroys sleep — anxiety, late-night forecast checking, and generators running all night. The pressure drop and the sleep loss arrive together, and separating their contributions afterwards is impossible. Deciding in advance that you will stop checking the forecast after a certain hour is more useful than it sounds.

Plan for no power. If you rely on a device that needs charging, a cold pack from a freezer, or a dark quiet room with air conditioning, work out the backup before the power goes. A battery pack charged in advance is worth more than an extra case of water.

Eat and drink on schedule. Meal skipping and dehydration are common during storm preparation and both are recognised triggers. During an evacuation they are almost guaranteed unless you plan for them.

Know your escalation point. Decide ahead of time what symptoms would make you seek medical help during a storm, when emergency services may be unavailable. A headache that is sudden and severe, or that comes with fever, confusion, weakness, numbness, vision loss or a stiff neck, is not a weather migraine and needs assessment regardless of the weather.

Tracking it, rather than guessing

The value of recording pressure alongside symptoms during hurricane season is that it turns an argument into data. Many people are told, or half-believe, that their storm headaches are anxiety. Some of them are. Some of them are not. A record that shows attacks beginning during the slow decline, 36 hours before the anxiety-inducing part of the storm, is informative in a way that memory is not.

Coastal locations give the cleanest signal because the changes are largest. A place like Lake Charles, Louisiana, which took two landfalls six weeks apart in 2020, or Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks, where the Gulf Stream makes coastal storms a year-round feature, will show swings that are unmistakable on a chart. What the evidence actually says

It is worth being honest about the state of the research. Studies of barometric pressure and headache have produced mixed results. Several have found associations between falling pressure and migraine onset, some have found associations only in subgroups, and some have found nothing. A recurring theme is that a minority of people appear genuinely pressure-sensitive while the majority are not, which would tend to dilute any effect measured across a whole population.

Hurricanes complicate the picture further because they bring several potential triggers at once: pressure change, humidity, disrupted sleep, stress, missed meals, and sometimes evacuation. Attributing an attack cleanly to pressure is not possible for an individual event. How much does barometric pressure drop during a hurricane?

It depends entirely on the storm's strength and how close it passes. Central pressures range from around 990 hPa for a tropical storm to below 920 for the most intense hurricanes. At a location 100 kilometres from the centre of a major hurricane, a fall of 20 to 30 hPa over twelve to twenty-four hours would be typical.

Can I feel a hurricane before it arrives?

Some people report symptoms beginning a day or two ahead, during the slow initial decline. Whether this is pressure, the swell and humidity changes that accompany it, or anticipation is difficult to separate for any single storm. A multi-season record is the only way to answer it for yourself.

Is the pressure rise after the storm as bad as the fall?

Some people find it worse. The rise behind a departing system is often faster than the fall ahead of it, and if the eye passes directly overhead the reversal is abrupt. Should I evacuate differently if I get weather migraines?

The decision to evacuate should be made on safety grounds alone. But if you do evacuate, treat your migraine medication as essential kit rather than something to collect later, and expect the drive itself — heat, dehydration, missed meals, hours of glare — to add its own triggers on top of the pressure.

Does a Category 1 hurricane cause fewer symptoms than a Category 5?

Not reliably. The Saffir-Simpson categories describe wind speed, which correlates with central pressure but not with the pressure change at your specific location. A weak but very close system can move your barometer more than a strong one passing far offshore.

What about tropical storms that never become hurricanes?

They still produce substantial pressure falls, often 10 to 20 hPa, and they are far more frequent. If you are pressure-sensitive, the named storms that make no headlines may account for more of your season than the ones that do.
