Pressure and weather in Fortuna Foothills
Fortuna Foothills spreads across the alluvial fans at the base of the Gila Mountains, on the desert floor near the confluence of the Gila and the Colorado, in one of the sunniest and driest inhabited places in North America. For most of the year almost nothing happens to the barometer here. Pacific storm systems are stripped of their moisture crossing the peninsular ranges of California, and the winter frontal passages that reach this far southeast are usually weak. The exception is the North American monsoon, which arrives in early July when the wind shifts to draw moisture north from the Gulf of California, and through August storms build over the mountains and push across the desert with dramatic outflow boundaries, dust walls and abrupt local pressure jumps. Remnant Pacific tropical systems occasionally track up the Gulf of California in September, which is when the region gets its heaviest rain and its largest pressure fall of the year.
