Fridley runs along the east bank of the Mississippi just above Minneapolis, where the river cuts across the Anoka sand plain, a broad flat outwash deposit that drains quickly and heats fast on summer afternoons. That flat open ground offers no obstacle to storms, and the northern Twin Cities suburbs have a long history with them: the 1965 tornado outbreak that crossed this corridor remains the reference event for the region. The severe season peaks in May and June, when strong lows crossing the Dakotas draw humid air north from the plains and the pressure falls sharply through the afternoon before a line of storms arrives from the west. Winter belongs to Alberta clippers, fast and dry with abrupt gradients, and to the deeper Colorado and Panhandle lows that bring the heavy snow. The sand plain also produces some of the coldest calm winter mornings in the metro under a strong high.
