Goodyear sits on the broad, flat Gila River plain at the western edge of the Phoenix basin, with the Sierra Estrella rising sharply to the south. For most of the year the barometer here is remarkably quiet, because the Sonoran desert spends spring and early summer under a persistent thermal low that changes very little from day to day. The exception is the monsoon, which runs from early July into mid September and is far and away the season that matters most. Outflow from storms collapsing over the higher terrain to the east races across the open valley floor as a gust front, sometimes carrying a wall of dust, and the pressure jump ahead of it can be abrupt, arriving in minutes rather than hours. Winter brings occasional Pacific storms crossing from California, and these produce the slower, deeper declines more familiar to people from wetter climates, though only a handful arrive each year.
