Havelock sits on the strip of pine flatwoods between the Croatan National Forest and the lower Neuse, which by this point has widened into an estuary several miles across on its way to Pamlico Sound. The eastern Carolina coastal plain is one of the most hurricane-exposed regions in the country, and the season from late August through early October dominates everything else here. Storms tracking up from the Bahamas or in from the Gulf produce the deepest and longest pressure declines this area records, and the flat terrain combined with the sounds means the rainfall and surge that follow can be far worse than the wind alone would suggest.
