Pressure and weather in Irmo
Irmo sits on the shore of Lake Murray in the South Carolina Midlands, on the ground between the Broad and the Saluda where the Piedmont flattens toward the coastal plain. The Midlands are reliably the hottest part of the state in summer, sheltered from the sea breeze that cools the coast and too far from the mountains to benefit from elevation, and the barometer through July and August is correspondingly flat for long stretches. The events that matter arrive from two directions. Tropical systems and their trailing moisture can stall over the Midlands, and the catastrophic flooding of October 2015 came from exactly that setup, showing as a long shallow decline over several days rather than a dramatic drop. In winter the southern edge of the cold air damming that grips the Upstate sometimes reaches this far, and when it does the area gets freezing rain. Spring squall lines arriving from the west round out the active periods.
What this means for you
Long stalled rain events give slow declines that build over days. Reviewing your barometric pressure forecast across a week catches what a daily check would miss.
