Loudon sits on the riverbank where the Great Valley of East Tennessee broadens into the Sweetwater Valley, with long parallel ridges running northeast to southwest on either side. Those ridges channel the low-level wind along the valley axis and leave the area unusually prone to air stagnation: when a high settles overhead, a shallow layer of air gets trapped in the valley for days, humidity builds, and the barometer sits almost motionless while conditions at ground level steadily deteriorate.
