Pressure and weather in Mechanicsburg

Mechanicsburg sits at roughly 450 feet in the Great Valley, the broad limestone trough that runs the length of the Appalachians, with South Mountain rising to the southwest and Blue Mountain forming an unbroken ridge to the north. Its position makes it one of the most reliably ambiguous forecast spots in the eastern United States, because it lies in the overlap between two storm tracks. Alberta clippers race in from the northwest, arriving with modest pressure falls of eight to fifteen hPa but very fast recoveries and a sharp cold push behind. Coastal lows climbing the seaboard bring the large events, twenty to thirty hPa over a day and a half, and these are the storms that decide whether a winter is remembered. What makes the valley distinctive is what happens in between. Cold air that has drained down from the north pools along the valley floor and refuses to mix out, while milder air from the south slides over the top of it. The result is the freezing-rain corridor the Cumberland Valley is known for, and during it the barometer often rises gently while conditions on the ground deteriorate hour by hour. Summer is quieter, though squall lines coming over Blue Mountain in the late afternoon can deliver a brief, sharp pressure jump.

What this means for you

The valley's winter storms swing the reading further and faster than anything in the warm season. A migraine tracker app that samples continuously is the only way to separate a clipper from a coastal low in your own record.
